Who we are

We’re the National Ban Spit hoods Coalition. We’re a group of people with lived experience and expertise in campaigning around issues of justice. We’re human rights organisations, legal centres, researchers and academics, and civil society groups. Together, we work towards a future without spit hoods in Australia.  

We know that there are three essential parts to that future — 

• Legislated bans on spit hoods in each state and territory, that 
• Cover every context, and 
• Every person. 

To get us to a future without spit hoods, we — 

• Build an evidence base and model legislation 
• Advocate directly to parliamentarians 
• Seek transparency on the use of spit hoods and similar restraints 
• Grow community knowledge and political momentum on spit hoods bans 
• Offer advocacy support to families who have lost loved ones to spit hoods and to those who have survived being hooded.

We particularly stand to support outcomes that limit and reject the expansion of carceral responses, and instead hold confidence in community solutions.
